The 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster, chassis #83901, boasts an extraordinary 23-season competition career in SCCA’s E Production class from 1967 to 1989, driven by Dr. David Helmick and John O’Steen piloting it to two Central Division Championships (1979, 1980), an SCCA National Championship in 1981, 18 Runoffs appearances. Helmick launched the car’s success with five straight Runoffs qualifications before O’Steen acquired it and, after years of shared endurance racing triumphs including class wins at Sebring, Daytona, and Le Mans along with the 1981 E Production National Championship. Helmick later repurchased the Speedster and continued its podium-filled Runoffs streak through 1989, cementing its legendary status before semi-retiring. The Speedster experienced a meticulous, street-legal race restoration by renowned 356 specialist Roy Smalley of Eurowerks between 2009 and 2011.
