GT40 Mk I
Class:
Owner: Benjamin Levy
Hometown: Andover, MA
This 1965 Ford GT40 P1030 might be the most famous Ford GT40 without a race history. In 1965, the 1030 was finished as a rolling chassis (no engine and unpainted). It wasn't until 1967, that it and three other GT40s were painted light blue and completed to "semi-road car” specs. Once completed, Shell Oil borrowed the four cars to make "the second-most-expensive car commercial ever made" at the track in Monza, Italy. Later, while painted red, it was featured in the well-known double-page color magazine ad asking, "Would you let your daughter marry a Ford Owner?" The current owner returned the 1030 to its original state with a Holley carburetor and Borrani wire wheels. In 2001 and 2002, it was loaned to the Ford Design Studio for inspiration while they were working on the design of the 2005/2006 Ford GT. The 1030 appeared with the new Ford GT at the press unveiling and in Ford ads and articles. This car was never seriously raced so it remains in its original condition.
